Chandelier Quilt

The Plan and How it Changed

This quilt didn’t start out in my head as a blue and green quilt. It started as a blue quilt. I knew I wanted to use up my blue scraps, but when I began, I hadn’t decided on a background color yet.

I cut out the blue squares and laid them out to make sure I had a nice gradient from light to dark. Once I had the blues organized, I went digging through my stash to see what I could use for the background fabric. I’ve been shopping my stash quite a bit lately, and my color choices are starting to dwindle.

Choosing a Background

I didn’t want to mix and match background fabrics. I did, however, have enough of a green print left over from another quilt where it had been used as the backing. Most of the time, I default to a white or black background, but it felt like time to try something different. I decided to go with the green.

The quilt design is simple. Each block is made with one blue square and one background square, both the same size. A four-patch block is set in between each of the solid blocks, which adds a little interest without taking away from the gradient effect of the blues.

I didn’t trim the points off the on-point squares until after the quilt was finished. I thought that might be easier, but it ended up being a lot of work basting down each of the squares. I wish I had taken a picture of what that looked like.

Choosing a Quilting Design

For the quilting, I chose a simple swirl design to soften the sharp angles of the on-point squares. I used a light gray thread, which blended nicely across the entire quilt. I finished it off by binding the quilt in the same green fabric I used for the background.

Final Thoughts

I really enjoyed trying a different background color for this quilt. I think I’m going to start incorporating more color into my backgrounds instead of always reaching for white or black.
