Exploding Heart Quilt in Pink and Yellow

I finally made the Exploding Heart quilt pattern by Slice of Pi, a pattern that has been on my list for quite a while.

I wanted to make a quilt for a friend whose favorite colors are pink and yellow, just to let her know that I was always thinking about her. Since it was almost Valentine’s Day, this felt like the perfect pattern. The scrappiness of this quilt really appealed to me and felt like a good fit for what I had in mind.

Choosing the Colors

I pulled all of the pinks and yellows from my scrap bin and ended up with 10 pinks and 9 yellows to work with. It felt a little risky committing to such a limited color palette, but I trusted that the design would do the heavy lifting.

I got so wrapped up in the process that I forgot to take pictures along the way. I followed the instructions for the scrappy version, letting the colors land randomly without overthinking the placement.

Trusting the Process

Even though I don’t love trimming half-square triangles, this quilt came together surprisingly quickly.

It was really hard to trust the process and go totally random since I was using just two colors, but I do think it came together quite nicely. The contrast between the pinks and yellows gives the heart so much movement.

Quilting Choices

For the quilting, I used a light pink Omni thread and quilted it with the Elegant Hearts B2B pantograph by Anne Bright. I chose pink thread instead of white thread because I wanted the thread to disappear into the heart and give the quilt a little bit of movement and a lacey feel in the background.

I love how the delicate scrollwork echoes the heart shape without overpowering the quilt top.

The Finished Quilt

This was such a fun quilt to make, and my friend absolutely loved it. Quilts like this are a reminder of why I enjoy making gift quilts so much—there’s something special about stitching love into every seam.
